Kisfazék — recipe platform for web, iOS and Android

Project period
2018–present

Kisfazék is an owned recipe and food platform built around a shared Drupal backend, a web experience, and Flutter applications for iOS and Android. Originally started in 2018 and later revived after a longer pause, the product has been publicly available since 27 June 2023.

Challenge

The original Drupal 8 project had to be turned into a maintainable and extensible product after several years of inactivity. The challenge went beyond updating an ageing codebase: the platform also needed a shared content and user layer capable of serving both the website and the mobile applications.

My role

I am responsible for product development, Drupal architecture and implementation, the design and development of the Flutter applications, API integrations, and the ongoing technical evolution of the platform.

The visual foundation of the website comes from a Figma design created by a former graphic designer colleague in 2018. I implemented and evolved that foundation as the product expanded. The information architecture, screen layouts, and most UX decisions in the mobile applications are my own work, adapted to the established visual identity of the website.

Solution

I revived the Drupal 8 codebase, upgraded it to Drupal 9, and subsequently evolved it through Drupal 10 to its current Drupal 11 foundation. Drupal acts as the central content and user management system for both the website and the mobile applications.

The platform brings together advanced recipe and ingredient search, community recipe publishing, editorial content, serving-size calculations, nutritional information, shopping lists, ratings, and other user-facing features. It also includes AI-assisted cooking capabilities, including a recipe assistant grounded in the platform’s own recipe collection.

Outcome and proof

The result is a continuously evolving digital product available across multiple platforms. The live website and the publicly available iOS and Android applications provide direct evidence of the product’s web, backend, and mobile engineering.
